That decision was made back in the 1950s. Remember too that this country has more oil than it knows what do with in the form of shale oil. The oil companies own most of that too, but it is cheaper and easier to buy crude elsewhere. Even without that factor, we are not over some sort of barrel. That is sheer fiction. The Middle East and other developing country oil producers need to sell their oil just as much as we need to buy it. The so-called oil embargo of the early '70s proved that.
