Hi David--

In view of your oft-expressed opinion of COBOL, I am sure that you
enjoyed the piece: "The COBOL jigsaw puzzle: Fitting object-oriented and
legacy applications together" by Elizabeth Flint (from the Santa Teresa
Lab) in the current issue (Vol. 36, No. 1, 1997) of the
_IBM_Systems_Journal_. Ms Flint points out that "Visual Age for COBOL
for OS/2" is one of "the new object-oriented COBOL compilers from
IBM."

She deals with three types of "wrappers" to marry the two completely
different approaches to problem solution. Which one to use depends on
which type of program ("legacy" or "object-oriented")
is using the
facilities of the other.

Not that I know too much about it, but it seems to me that the
problems she discusses will require equivalent solutions when Santa
Teresa delivers the new object-oriented PL/I compilers, said to become
available "real soon now."

    Any comment.
