Quotes are taken from a message written by Ron to Charles on 07/20/96...
RM>Sheila's going to kill me, but a kid is going to move the
RM>turtle around and draw stuff, and it's going to be COOL..
RM>for the first few times... And then...
In the version of LOGO that we used on the CoCo there were actually
three levels of programming - direct commands given to move the turtle
(FD 100 to move forward 100 spaces), an editor for building sequential
programs (several commands could be written and combined into a series
of movements) and "doodle mode." I don't know if this doodle mode is
standard in all versions of LOGO, but it allowed the use of short-cut
keys so that the turtle could be moved with little regard to any
programming (the 8 key for example moved the turtle forward 10 spaces).
Once the kids learned the Doodle mode they had little use for the edit
mode - it wasn't nearly as much fun .
RM>It comes back to a comparison between what the kid can do
RM>and what's out there around him. If there was nothing
RM>around, then getting the turtle to do "stuff" would be
RM>inspiring, but with all the stuff around THESE days, there
RM>isn't much s/he can do that is inspirational....
Good point.
