subject: Zoom mods

I'll admit that I'm not using professional equipment, but I would love
to be able to make that zoom modification someone was just talking
about. I have just a standard, full-size VHS camcorder. Could I crack
it open and patch into the zoom controls? Here's what I was thinking
(I've already had it apart once just to look): splice into the circuits
that affect the finger controls. Put a 3-pin XLR or equiv. connector on
the outside of the case. Then, have a momentary switch on the tripod
handle (two, actually) to control tele/wide. Is this the proper line of
thought? Also, can I make it variable speed perchance? Finally, how
difficult is it to make external controls for the focus?
Thanks for any help!
BJ McKinney
