The pope is considered infallible only when speaking "officially" on matter of doctrine Formally it is called speaking ex cathedra. On top of that, there are disputes even among Catholic theologians on what is a matter of doctrine and what is not. The popes "infallibility" is in fact greatly restricted. Worse yet for supporters of infallibility, that "doctrine" is only about 130 years old. There are still many within the church, particularly among the laity, who don't accept its legitimacy. It is a concept that only conservative Catholics, including popes, want to see continue. --- BBBS/NT v4.01 Flag-5* Origin: Barktopia BBS Site http://HarborWebs.com:8081 (1:379/45) SEEN-BY: 633/267 270 @PATH: 379/45 1 633/267 |
