There is nothing new with solid-state HDDs which date back to 1980s. The
only concern is the "rewrite cycle limit" inherent to Flash EPROM
technology - a single spot of data may wear out after some 100000
rewrite cycles. To address this problem, either a smart rotation
circuitry has to be implemented (every Flash-card manufacturer claims
they have one), or specially designed Flash filesystems are to be used.
In this case Samsung is likely to adopt the second choice.
AAMOF, the plain old FAT16 fits surprisingly well for Flash-based DASD
(except some worst-case scenarios). HPFS386, with its last-access-time
updates and tree balancing, is not as universal, and JFFS (Journaled
Flash File System) has been the buzzword for embedded Flash EPROM
applications long before Longhorn.
