The other morning as I was leaving for work in the pre-dawn fog, my
headlights lit up something at the end of the driveway. There was a grey,
roughly human shaped outline about 4 feet tall. It appeared to be standing
exactly in the middle of the two-lane road I was approaching. I gently
slowed to a stop as I approaced the end of the driveway. Now, because of the
change in viewing angle, I could see that it was actually standing in the
neighbor's yard across the road. Unfortunately, because of the angle change,
my headlights no longer directly illuminated it.
I was expecting it to be an early-morning jogger in a grey jumpsuit, kid
waiting for the schoolbus, or something along those lines. On the odd chance
it was a burgular, prowler, or grey alien, I got my handcuffs and pepper
spray ready. I decided against hitting it with the spotlight because I
didn't want to spook it. I watched it for a few minutes to see which way it
was moving, and realized it wasn't.
I pulled out on the road, which changed the viewing angle again, and I could
see that it was actually rectangular, with dark markings that blended in with
the fog and distorted the outline. Driving along a few more yards and
hitting it with the spotlight, I could read the red letters on the white
background telling me which candidate I should elect sheriff.
Oh, well.
