The lines are really getting blurry now, many "foreign" cars are
manufactured in plants located in the US, many "American" cars
use parts from foreign plants. I do think that way back when that foreign
cars had higher reliability and may still to a degree, but I also recall
the higher cost of repair and parts that probably negated a large part of
the longer period between repairs (though not the inconvenience of earlier
repairs for the US cars if that is actually the case).

That said, last time I checked the Saturn brand enjoyed a competitive
resale value. Still, buying new cars is always a losing proposition, if the
resale value is a driving factor, then buying a 1-2 year old car is a far
smarter strategy as the lion's share of the annual decline in value occurs
as the rear bumper of your new car clears the dealer's lot.
