It assumes that the software can understand the format of all network
addresses. Messages that are gated to FTN from other network types could (and
do) have very foreign appearing address formats that do not resemble any kind
of FTN address. In fact, FTS-9 even eludes to such foreign address formats by
codifying how a "double-quote character within a ... address" is to be
represented. Trying to parse/use the address from a message-ID is just a bad
idea. If you need an address of the originator, there's other/better ways to
get it.
