No actual books on Alex, but he's been written up in a ton of magazines and
books, including Readers Digest and Bird Talk. One of the bird clubs in Utah
recently released a video tape about Alex, showing him "at work" in the
laboratory with Dr. Pepperberg and some of the students at the university in
Arizona. It's an excellent tape!
Insofar as other books are concerned, yes, there are a ton of 'em! For a
fact, I know there's quite a few about the monkeys that effectively use sign
language. I think KoKo was the first to develop a sign language vocabulary in
the hundreds of words.
Then there's the elephant who paints (her work has been in galleries).
You might also look for the book When Elephants Weep. It doesn't specifically
talk about human:animal communication, but it's a fascinating study of how
animals interact with each other and how it might be compared to human
emotions.
