This _may_ vary with different boards and controllers.  The older type that
only allowed going over the 2.1G "limit" required the CMOS be set
to "Type 1".

Those are my favorites, the 40G and 5400.  Plenty fast enough for this old
AMD 500, and quite reliable across brands.  When you get up to the 7200 RPM
80G drives and higher, they all get hot, and SHOULD have a separate fan
blowing over them, but VERY few cases have any provision for that.
