I've been using a Mini Disk for over a year now and I've found it to be
a really useful piece of kit both for domestic use and public performance.
The compression isn't obtrusive or obvious, even when playing at volume
 through a large PA.
The greatest advantage for me though is the instantaneous response.
I work a lot in theatre and the Mini Disk is absolutely ideal for
providing sound effects or backing music where split-second timing is
essential. No other medium comes close - both DAT and DCC both suffer
because of the lag between hitting "play" and hearing the sound and also
because of rewind times (no such thing with Mini Disk).
Other advantages are that MD is a rewritable format and playlists can
easily be altered in seconds - ideal for last minute changes or onstage
 cock-ups.
I would urge people to buy one. Any drop in audio quality due to the
compression algorithms is negligable compared to the practical benefits.
