This isn't exactly home schooling... but close.. its a very unique and (I
think) educational teaching/learning method. Sail Training. I am only 15..
and in last summer I spent a little under a month on a replica of a 1788
square
rigger, The Lady Washington. Although the Lady Washinton isn't set up to
train
their crew for a high school credit, I'm convinced that I learned more on the
boat in a month that I had in my public school for the last year.
Most think "sailing? thats not very educational... you can't do that
instead of school." but the skills I learned I would never have learned in
school. Problem solving was tested to the extream, we worked 14 hour days 7
days a week, thats a 98 hour week and 90 hours of that we were doing basic
nd
somme advanced problem solving of all kinds. Teamwork as well was nessicary,
all twelve of the crew lives together, eight of them in the fo'c's'le and 4
n
the aft cabin.. only two state rooms for the captain and first mate. So we
must work together all day and live together, a difficult task on a 70'
quare
rigger. People skills, communication with others isn't really taught in
school. On the boat, I was talking to people constantly. If it wasn't
learing
from the first mate and captain it was talking to passangers about the
extensive history of the vessel or taking orders from the sailmaster and
helping others. It was the best experiance I've had in my life. Now, I am
trying to get my high school to let me crew aboard the adventuress (a
schooner,
sailboat) and receive credit for it, and it looks as though it might work.
Now, I post this because people in the conference are posting about new
ideas and alternative forms of education...I highly recomend this. If you
have
questions about programs, safty, life on board, where to start, information,
and anything else I can help. I have contacts with a number of vessels and
orginasations.
Note: not only crewing is benificial, their are a number of vessels that
offer "semesters affloat" for high school and college levels. Some vessels
specialize in a few day long trips for all ages to teach. In my opinion and
many others all of these are very benificial.
You can reply to me by posting here or e-mail me at amckee@az.com.
hope you're interested.
