camera) assigns to the shots the file names itself - of course.

They are not meaningless, on the contrary. Each file has it's own 
specific date and time of creation, so it's rather easy to keep track. 
David Brain gave you a good example, but even that isn't mandatory. Just 
put on the CD-label same basic info about date, time and location. Or 
you can assign one CD's to specific task, or location, or person etc.... 
etc... The sky is the limit

Also, don't forget, the write one cd are write once, but you can re-use 
them till they are completely filled up (this a big difference with the 
"regular" combination CD drive-CD write once).
