Of course. Your obstacle may have been a brain-dead installer incapable
of converting primary freespace into an enlargement of the current
extended. Simply create your target partition before starting any decent
linux installer and you will be fine. Best also to create a linux swap
partition while you're at it. All you need to do in the linux installer
is select the new partition as the target location. Some linux
installers are pretty dumb, requiring freespace instead of an empty
partition. To ensure the correct type of freespace, just delete the new
one you created in advance if you find this necessary, preferably with
the tool used to create it rather than an unfamiliar linux installation
program.
