subject: Gerrold`s Blues

JPH> I have heard that GR and Gerrold had a falling out, but I have
JPH> never heard specifically about what. I heard a rumor that Gerrold
JPH> wanted to establish an openly gay character on the Enterprise, but tha
JPH> GR and others refused to take things that far. Was the the center of
JPH> the problem or what?
VM>That was indeed a part of their conflict. Roddenberry had said he wanted
to
VM>do this on TNG (and never did, BTW),
I bet that there are a lot of things that GR thought would be
nice to do in TNG but never got the chance...
I won't deal with the particular issue, but I bet that American
TeeVee is very resistant to anything other than "More of the Same, only
 Different."
OTOH, there's B5 which did break some of those barriers.
VM>so Gerrold wrote an
VM>episode called "Fire and Ice". It was something of an AIDS
VM>allegory in its main plot. And it did feature a same-sex
VM>couple. Roddenberry initially accepted the script and then
VM>later rejected it.
I wish I could read it. Hell I wish I could publish
  it in THE UNIVERSE: TREK
VM>The main conlict, though, was Gerrold's contention that he
VM>get some credit as a co-creator of TNG for the extensive
VM>work he had done in the initial stages of the inception of
VM>the show.
VM>Victoria Aeron Mackey
He should have gotten credit. I give co-author credit to my
old Trek GM for the ideas that I rewrote for Trek stories. I did all
the writing and characterization, etc, but his was the basic idea that
 underpinned the whole excercise.
All I have to offer is credit where credit is due, and lavish
aprreciation for the creative abilities of my friends.
I don't wanna be negative or anything, but I wish GR's ego
hadn't been so ramapant. OTOH, who else but a raving egomaniac could
have pushed the whole idea through?
