Hi folks,
I want to thank all of you people who answered my questions and
offered tips on how to win a race in the NC State Senior Olympic
Finals held in Raleigh on October 6. The training, tips and a new
Cannondale R900 bike made the difference. This is the first year I've
ever raced so I went to Raleigh never expecting to win anything.
Here's what happened in my 65-69 age group...
1-Mile Race 5K Race (3.1mi) 10K Race (6.2mi.)
1st Hottinger 2:35.37 1st Hottinger 9:27.63 1st Hottinger 19:15.79
2nd Wallace 2:41.17 2nd Todd 9:31.46 2nd Wallace 20:17.18
3rd Becton 2:47.23 3rd Wallace 10:04.35 3rd Todd 20:34.00
There were probably 75-100 seniors in the cycling events (2340 in all
events). The first race started at 8:30am on a cold windy morning on a
police training road that made about a 1.5 mile loop up and down hills.
The nice thing was that the races started down-hill. I believe I hit
33-35 going down but going up some of the hills, especially against cold
wind were tough. I'm a gear stomper - I stand up and try to get to the top
as quick as possible while most others geared down.
It was a real fun trip. Wife enjoyed the day before shopping in the Malls.
The amazing thing was that I spent the weekend in the Cardiac ward two
weeks before the race. After many tests and a final stress test two days
before the race, the Doc let me race. No pain whatsoever. As matter of fact,
I've never had any pain riding or racing! But would you believe, one senior
was racing with a pacemaker! And there were some 80+ age seniors racing.
Now got to decide whether to enter Nationals next year in Tucson. Sport
is beginning to get expensive...
