It was Hammett.  The "Continental Op" was written in 1923.  "The Big
Knockover" was written in 1924, "The Dain Curse" in 1928, "Red Harvest"in
1929, "The Maltese Falcon" in 1929, "The Glass Key" in 1931 and finally,
"The Thin Man" in 1933.
