  Thanks for the correction. I downloaded it, and am VERY pleased to see
  'gcc --version' report 2.8.1. It works quite good so far, I haven't
  spotted any bugs (yet)

  I wonder, is gcc going to be abandoned and superceded with the new
  egcs? What's the deal with those two paralel environments?
