RS> I don't know that I'll be in this echo much but I have long been a
RS> fan of home schooling. I believe it brings greater learning and
RS> retention results than public school. I've heard it said now and then
RS> that public school is important so that kids learn to socialize. Here,
RS> in Dallas, there was a drive-by shooting at Sunset High School that put
RS> six kids in the hospital. I don't think kids need that much social
RS> activity. One person in this echo mentioned that she heard her kids
RS> using language and improper attitudes towards certain subjects and she
RS> decided they could do better at home. I agree, though, for different
RS> reasons.
i thank you for your post. I was one that gave this reason, but it was
not the reason. It was the icing on the cake. The decision to home
school is not an easy one. And of course there is the thought of
failure. Our society is designed that without being a professional you
can not do the job. That has proven time and time again to be nonsense
in many cases. Yes, I would go to a professional for the diagnosis of
disease, but I would not necessarily go to an accountant for bookkeeping.
Being that parents are with their children day after day, they (if the
look and listen) will understand their children better to teach them.
We must also understand that not every parent is capable of this. Some
do not have the patience and some are financially burdened enough that
they must work.
RS> My father taught me to read. My step-grandfather taught me the short
RS> route through differential calculus. Since I was ten, he had given me
RS> books on electronics. Now that I'm going to school to get a better
RS> job, I had a 98+ average in my active devices class (diodes,
RS> transistors, amplifiers, electronic switches.) On tests, I had four
RS> 100's and a 97. I didn't have to take the final.
This happens to many students taught or tutored at home.
It was really interesting to hear about your story. Glad things worked out
good for ya.
