depends what you mean by competent. i've been writing in c for about 8

years, and i don't find it much different to the other procedural

languages that i have used over the years - fortran, cobol, (gulp)

basic, assembler, clist, rexx etc. i can't say that i am completely au

fait with the more exotic areas of pointers as i have had little reason

to delve too deeply there, there always seems to be a more

straightforward approach. i sometimes thing that c programmers,

especially unix people love obscurity for it's own sake.

oops like c++ though seem to require a shift in attitude, especially

when writing for windows, an event driven environment. thats the reason

for doing it, to get something of a challenge, otherwise i might as well

just buy a product, and save the effort.

i'll put my little problem into locuser, and see if anyone rides in to

the rescue. (-8
