The location for a second drive in a Thinkpad is usually the ultra2000 
bay. As this bay also has to accomadate either a CD-Rom Drive or floppy 
drive (rarely now a days) - the bay is larger than is needed for the 
2.5" harddisk, so yes you will need some sort of proprietry adapter.

For more information go to http://www.pc.ibm.com/support put in your 
system model number, go to the publications option and download the HMM 
(Hardware Maintenance Manual) - this is the engineers handbook and will 
contain diagrams showing how everything fits together and listing the 
appropriate part numbers of parts you may require.
