Looking at the circulation numbers this will be the first newsletter for a
large portion of you. I hope you find it to contain useful information. It
is typically been sent out more frequently but there has been a shortage of
compelling reasons to publish one until recently. Please read the past
issues of the Tech Support newsletter on our Web page.

Announcements:
______________
* The Diamond Multimedia Systems World Wide Web page
now includes the Supra modem information
previously available on the Supra Web page . Please
change the bookmark in your browser to our new home page. What?? You
don't have a bookmark for us in your browser! Now would be a good time to
add one :-)
* Diamond Multimedia began shipping the SupraExpress 336i SP with ASVD in
November. This internal modem for PC's has appeal to a wide range of users.
Not only does it support data connection speeds up to 33,600bps but it also
supports voice messaging and speakerphone features. Additionally, we have
added ASVD (Analog Simultaneous Voice and Data). The ASVD feature allows
you to conduct a data transfer and voice conversation over the same
connection. A perfect feature for gamers or business partners. The ESP
(Estimated Selling Price) is only $129.00. External units for both PC's and
Macs are scheduled to begin shipping soon.
* New Tech Support telephone number. The new phone number for contacting
Technical Support is 541-967-2450 for all modem products.
Upgrades:
_________
* Upgrade your 28,800 modem to 33,600 !! If you have a SupraFAXModem 288
or SupraSonic 288V+ you can update the ROM code in your modem to support
speeds up to 33,600bps by running a simple software utility [Note: Some
SupraFAXModem 288's will need a factory upgrade to achieve the higher speeds
but most will only need the ROM upgrade utility]. If you have a
SupraExpress 288 you can order a new ROM chip and upgrade your modem without
any factory service.
For all of the details please go to the Firmware Updates page on our Web
site or call our Customer Service department at 800-727-8772 or 360-604-1410.
* Speaking of upgrades....We have just posted a new firmware (ROM) release
for the SupraFAXModem 288/336 and SupraSonic modems. This includes a 33.6
ROM version for the 288PB (thank you PowerBook owners for being so patient).
The upgrade is posted on our Web page . Select
Firmware Updates at the home page and follow the instructions.
* FAXcilitate 2.2 will shortly be available for download from our FTP
and Web sites. The
archive will update owners of FAXcilitate 2.0, 2.0a or 2.1 to the new
version. If you currently have FAXcilitate 2.x you are strongly encouraged
to download this latest version. If you have FAXcilitate 1.7.x you will
need to purchase the full package from our Customer Service staff. Our
Customer Service staff can be reached at 800-727-8772, 360-604-1410 or
sales@supra.com.
* Supra VoiceMail 2.3 will soon be available for download as well. The
archive will update owners of Supra VoiceMail 2.2. Supra VoiceMail 2.3
fixes a variety of reported problems and adds many features to the prior
version -- including 10 mailboxes, CID support, fax-on-demand and pager
notification. Supra VoiceMail 2.3 will begin shipping with new SupraSonic
336V+ this month.
Tech Tips:
___________
Part I. General Tips
* Some users have reported random disconnects when using version 1.440-12
ROM code with the SupraFAXModem 288/336 and SupraSonic 336V+. We have just
posted a new ROM release, version 1.440-25. Please download this new code
and upgrade your modem. The upgrade is available on our Web site by
selecting Firmware Updates from the home page .
* Some users have reported problems with their SupraExpress 336 when the
Baud Rate in the software is set for 115,200. We are looking into the
causes of this. In the interim, set your baud rate to 57,600. No problems
have been reported when that speed is set in the software.
* Which modem do I have?? What features does it support?? We currently
produce a wide variety of modems with features ranging from just data and
fax processing to hands-free speakerphone models. The best way to determine
what your modem can do is to launch some terminal software (we ship COMit or
MicroPhone LT with our modem packages, though HyperTerminal or Zterm would
be fine too) and issue the command ATI10 followed by a carriage return.
That is the letters "AT" followed by the letter "I" then the number "10"
(you don't need the quotes). You will then see a listing of all the
supported features of your modem as well as the modem model name.
Part II. Macintosh Tips
* Faxing PageMaker documents. Since PageMaker has its own print dialog
box, there can be "confusion" on the part of the application and FAXcilitate
as to what should happen when you select Fax from the fax menu. To resolve
this, you must bring up the FaxPrint Setup window. The simplest way to do
this is to select Fax from the fax menu when your document is ready to fax.
Click the Setup button contained in the dialog box that opens. This should
open your FaxPrint Setup window. If all the settings are correct, simply
click OK and the FaxPrint window will open, allowing you to schedule your
x.
* If you get the FaxPrint dialog box when you are trying to Print to your
printer, go to the Chooser and select your printer driver from the left side
of the Chooser window. Close the Chooser. You should then see a dialog box
stating that you have changed your current printer. Great, that is what you
wanted to do. Click OK. You can now print.
This setup difficulty will occur if you select the FaxPrint driver in the
Chooser at some point. If you ever need to select that driver just remember
that you need to re-select your printer driver (LaserWriter, StyleWriter,
etc.) when you are finished.
Part III. PC/Windows Tips
* Using your Plug and Play modem for playing DOS games often requires that
you disable an external com port. Windows 95 can configure a Plug and Play
modem to use any available COM port (i.e. I/O address) and IRQ that are not
in use by another device. At times, this will result in your modem being
configured to use a COM port or IRQ that your DOS applications/games will
not recognize. It is often necessary for you to disable COM 1 or COM 2
(whichever is not already being used) on your system so that Windows 95 will
configure your PnP modem to use those settings. At that point, your DOS
games will work. [You may need to consult with your computer's manual or
vendor to learn how to properly disable COM 1 or COM 2 on your system]
* If you are looking for the most up to date Windows 95 drivers for your
Supra modem you can download them from our FTP site
. In general, if your modem is installed
and functioning you do not need to get this file. However, if you lost the
Utilities disk that we ship with the modem and you need a new copy of the
drivers, then this is the file for you.
* Installing a Plug and Play modem in a computer running Windows NT 4.0.
Windows NT 4.0 comes with a PnP driver for ISA devices (PNPISA.SYS). It is
on the CD in \drvlib\pnpisa\.
1. With the Explorer, go to the CD drive and to the directory
\drvlib\pnpisa\
2. Select PNPISA.INF, click the right mouse button, and select [Install] to
install the ISA PnP driver.
3. Reboot your computer and log back in as Administrator. The driver should
start searching for new hardware and find the modem.
4. Select manual configuration and scan through the list of configurations
(1 to 11) to find one that does not have a resource conflict. The system
should create the COM port if needed.
The ISA PnP driver should also find any other ISA devices on the bus such as
PnP sound cards and network cards, if present.
This process should not be used if you have a Plug and Play motherboard. In
that case, let the motherboard bios configure the modem.
* Installing a Plug and Play modem with OS/2 Warp 4.0. In the root
directory of the Warp 4.0 CD there is a file named README. This file
details how to use the COM driver with Plug and Play modems. Follow the
instructions and you should be set.
