This is  common misconception. BASIC was not written for ANYONE to
use. It was written to teach people how to write interpreters!

However, loads of people then knew how to write BASIC interpreters
(eg B Gates & crew) and the world was then faced with loads of
BASIC interpreters written by students!

No one thought anyone would actually use BASIC to write real programs!
