Thanks Barry. I've archived the file for possible future use but at this 
stage 
I've opted for adding three functions to my original program (this particular
one being a super simple TIC file processor). During a normal run (no command
line switches) it saves the return code to a file before exiting. There are 
two
command line switches which utilize that saved return code. By doing it this
way I not only get around the original problem but I can use the saved code 
in 
a number of different ways and in different batch files. Functionally it's a
bit like having an environment variable which remains even after turning the
computer off. I'm quite pleased with the results. :-)
