I would not have gone as far as to say that you had "about nil" chance
of getting a 5.1Gig drive, BUT it's likely that you will be paying as
much for an older-technology, slower 5.1Gig drive as you would for a
faster drive with a capacity as much as 10 or 20 times greater.
Closeout stores tend to price stuff in relation to the original list
price, but prices of computer-related items are plummeting. E.g., I
could now buy a "new" (but probably without a warranty) 9Gig drive
identical to the 7-yr-old one in this machine for less than half what I
paid for the original. But I could buy a faster, cooler, quieter 36GB
one of the same make (Seagate) with a 5-yr warranty for a quarter of
what I paid for the original.
I guess that you are concerned that anything that is not identical to
the original may not work. (And it's probably fears such as this that
result in any market for dinosaur drives at all.) But I replaced the
330MB drive in my old Toshiba notebook by a 5GB one, and I replaced the
20GB drive in my current Toshiba notebook by a 60GB one; no problem in
either case.
