In a message dated 12-28-98, Tobias Ernst said to David Noon about
"Timeslice release"
Hi Tobias,
[snip]
TE>And luckily, on those Warp releases where the DPMI time
TE>slice does not work, you can apply the kernel patch which
TE>can be found at
TE>wwwcip.rus.uni-stuttgart.de/~phy27258/mdosbug.html
I saw this patch posted on Fido but haven't tried it.

TE>Is this a joke or do you mean this serious?
It is serious. To find out more e-mail Carolyn at teampli{at}vnet.ibm.com,
which is IBM Santa Teresa labs., where the PL/I compilers are written.
I use Visual Age PL/I for OS/2 Version 2.0, Standard Edition. It is a very
powerful compiler, a _superset_ of the mainframe language, but costs a
bundle to buy.
TE>I would be
TE>interested in having PL/I or a compiler derived from that
TE>for use at home (I have been working at an IBM side where
TE>they used a special purpose language that has been derived
TE>from PL/I, and I liked it),
Probably PL/X, also known as PL/S or PL/AS. It is a mighty spiffy language
for writing operating system code.
TE>but the IBM PL/I compiler for OS/2 is simply too expensive :-|,
Yes, Murray Lesser and I have been griping about that in this echo for some
few months.
TE>and they don't seem to offer reduced educational prices.
This is yet another gripe about the marketing of PL/I compilers. They should
allow academic institutions preferential pricing, otherwise nobody will
offer PL/I training courses.
Regards
Dave
