subject: APL2 for OS/2

Hi David--

Old mailing lists never die; they don't even fade away :-(.

Once, in the dim distant past, I sent for an IBM demo of APL2 for
DOS. Today, I received (from the Santa Teresa Lab) Issue Number 1
(December 1998) of "Today's APL2." (This is obviously from a different
mailing list than the one I received "The PL/I Connection" on.)

This first issue of "Today's APL2" announces a new product - the
"Runtime Environment for Windows" so you can ship your APL2 products to
your Windows customers without them having to install the whole works.
They better be paying you reasonably well for your services. The base
price for the entire Runtime Environment is $250. The lowest license
fee (per copy) for the Library alone (if your customers don't need, or
you don't want them to have, the whole Environment package) is $150
each, at quantity 10. FWIMBW, according to the latest Indelible Blue
catalog, the base product (APL2 for OS/2 v 1.0) sells for only $405.00;
no price given for the Windows version but it probably is in the same
ball park (all prices US$).

Among other interesting tidbits in the newsletter: A new service
level is announced for the APL2 "workstation product set" (Windows,
OS/2, AIX/6000, and Solaris) as available for download. The OS/2, AIX,
and Solaris versions are at Level 14! The Windows version is only Level
3. They _have_ been busy little beavers out West, haven't they?

I never cared for APL, although many of my ex-colleagues found it
very useful. (I've still got that DOS demo around, somewhere, unused.)
But I thought you might be interested if you have dropped off the
mailing list in your travels. You can get back on the list by notifying
"apl2{at}vnet.ibm.com" or "CompuServe go IBMAPL2" Or, if
you insist:
               http://www.software.ibm.com/ad/apl

    Enjoy,

        --Murray
