Thinkpad passwords, there are several good sites.

gives an idea of the hardware requirements for password recovery of
various types.

 http://www.nortek.on.ca/faq.html

is a pretty good tutorial of what is where and what is implemented in
hardware and what  is implemented in software.

While wandering about to verify the links, since my last visit I even

which is almost on topic for the original post.
