Almost all ostensible inch sizes are nominals. The platters from my
original IBM PC AT 20M CMI drive measure exactly 5" across. More modern
'5.25"' drive platters might be 1/4" wider. ;-) The platters I have from
'3.5"' drives measure 3.75" across, ~1/4" wider than a
3.5" floppy
shell. '5.25"' drives fit in bays exactly 5.75" wide, while '3.5"'
drives measure ~4" across. The exception I'm aware of is that '5.25"'
floppy shells really are 5.25" wide, while '3.5"' is prolly close enough
to count as another exception.
