my preference is tightvnc. It is possible to set up a VNC X11 desktop
using the tightvnc server. This would work well for a headless system,
but you should disable the "boot into GUI" default system if you do
that, to avoid wasting RAM on two GUIs.

if you do this, you could try setting up the following file in the
'.vnc' directory, once you have tightvnc installed

~/.vnc/xstartup
---
#!/bin/sh

xrdb $HOME/.Xresources
xsetroot -solid grey
lxde-session &

---

I think RPi wants 'lxde-session' [I can't recall, and my RPis are off at
the moment].

anyway, to start it you'd do this (you could invoke it from rc.local,
let's say)

vncserver :0 -geometry 1220x900 -depth 24 -dpi 96

(I think it prompts you for a desktop access password when you start it,
so if you do this in a script you might have to get "tricky")

this would create a 1220x900 desktop with 24 colors, 96dpi

then you can use any VNC-capable viewer to access it.
