EMX 0.9d runs on 8MB machines (or even less, if it has to be), and also is a state of the art C++ compiler which has been written in C itself. Together with the Ressrouce Workshop from Borland, which also runs on 8MB machines, it is not too hard to create GUI applications with it, either.
