GH>Conservatives always will be big business. As far as taxes go I don't think >any one minds paying them as long as we are getting fair value for the dollar >and the money is wisely spent. I keep thinking of the Swedish and New Zealan >models and am sure that they could be modified to suit Canada's needs. Womb >tomb with incentives to better oneself makes sense, this every dog for himsel >does not, look at what is happening in B.C. and Alberta right now there are >people living in shelters that cannot afford to pay rent, and yes they are >working, in plenty of cases families are living in shelters and both are >working, but cannot afford the rent, food, clothing etc. I was reading in on >of the papers that some communities shelters are full and people are sleeping >sitting up, meanwhile the corporations keep getting richer, is there not some >thing amiss in this formula? GH>Some compassionate society we live in, ain't it? We are already one of the highest taxed nations in the world and losing ground at those rates so I don't know how you fix this without cutting a bunch of things like education and health care. England tried to be a level more socialistic than we are and look at the shape they are in.. Corporations live on greed. It's their raison d'etre and it's how we all rate them - and we complain bitterly if they don't pay dividends on their stock - so we can't blame them for not doing any more than they are forced to do. Companies need workers but want to pay as little as possible to hire them so as long as people agree to work for less money than they can live on then those wages won't change. The only control is over minimum wage and all I can say is it should be enough to live on 'minimally' and it should be better, or as well subsidized, as welfare is. By subsidized I mean that if you are on welfare you get special rent control, free prescriptions, free eyeglasses, etc.. etc.. A family making minimum wage gets quite probably less money than one on welfare and gets none of these extra goodies thrown in. It's almost a universal truth that if you take a minimum wage job to get off of welfare you take a big cut in pay. That said, every time I see people compare wages to company profits I feel it wouldn't be fair to do that unless those wages could Also be cut way back in years when the company makes little or no profit, but noone seems to be lobbying for that..
