OK, that would make sense.

I frequently zip and unzip files, but not huge quantities; either of zip
files or files in the zip.

Now this one I can make a statement on. I frequently restore a HUGE
directory set to one computer to work on it, then put it all back on
tape to restore to the original server. Just to eliminate any problems,
I delete the files on the original computer before restoring the backup
from the computer I did the work on. (I hope that makes sense...)
So in order to do this, I use a modified version of a REXX script I got
from Hobbes (I don't remember the name). It basically does the same
thing as the old DOS command DELTREE, recursing directories and deleting
files. I'm deleting on the order of 6 Gig of data in about 60,000 files
in probably 100 nested directories. (It also removes the directories.)
The whole process takes about 10 minutes, but has never had a problem.
This is on a JFS volume.

I don't remember if I saw that problem when I installed or not. I know
I had several other issues during installation. I attributed it to the
not-so-current software base and [probably] much newer hardware. Keep
in mind that I'm on WSeB CP2 and not eCS ...

Has it just started showing this problem or is this a more recent
install in which it never worked correctly?
What size of partitions (although I'm not certain this would be much of
a factor.)
Are you using cable termination? I never liked putzing around with
drive termination.
Do you have the parameters in the HBA's BIOS set correctly? For the
most part, it should autodetect.
I don't think you have a device number conflict, but check to make sure...

That's the version I have. I don't know if there's one newer. I never
bothered to look since this one worked OK.
Craig.
