Davey, that's the way it used to work, but Franklin's probably talking about the way it works now. When you buy PC100 now it has chip density compatible with the memory controllers when motherboards were made. It was only later that memory controllers were improved to use chips with higher density, and current and recently available new PC133 memory uses only chips with the higher density. Modern high density PC133 installed in an older system that doesn't understand it will either recognize half of it, or none of it. Right now I have several Socket 7, Slot 1, & socket 370 systems that could use more RAM, and 3 256M PC133 sticks that won't work in any of them at more than 128M. Populating old systems with more RAM now either costs a lot of money for premium priced low density sticks, or a lot of effort finding good used low density sticks at unscalped prices. Note that with used memory, just testing by popping it into a system to see if the BIOS finds it all is not acceptable. http://www.memtest86.com/ and your OS are both likely to find used RAM so tested to be unacceptable. -- "Love does not demand its own way." 1 Corinthians 13:5 Team OS/2 ** Reg.
