Some clubs pay better than that, more like $100 a night each, but keep in
mind, when I posted that message, I'm in a 5 piece band. The trios get
almost as much as us, so the take per person is higher for them.
We also live in Victoria, a sleepy city of 300,000. I'm sure in Vancouver
(big city 60 miles away), they pay better. We usually get about $150 a night
for a private dance, and they are much more fun to play. With the club I was
refering to in my original post, they've got a great stage, lights and sound
gear. There are bands that would play for free just to "get in the door".
There are over 100 "working" bands listed in the local musicians paper the
"Cosmic Debris". We're one of them, but we get more work than most.
Yes, the pay does suck at this club, but you can see what we're up against,
and we're not willing to travel very far to find other gigs.
Lastly, we don't make a living at it. We all have regular type jobs, and
this income is extra. I like to save it up and buy more toys !
