In that "Crossing" (?) book "Who killed Jesus?",
the author points
out that when the Zealots pulled down the Roman Eagle sigil from in
front of the Temple, the "plaza guard" arrested, tried, and executed
them in a manner of a few hours in their duty as "Passover Riot
Control". The Zealots were considered a much greater threat to Rome
than some nutty speaker accosting moneychangers in the square. While
in all likelyhood the point of view that the Temple wanted to preserve
their changing tables and the Roman government wanted to stamp out
seditious speech is probably the correct one, the meetings afterward
with "the movers and shakers" were probably added on later when the
movement gained greater importance. The Crossing book says that the
historical record points to the "Riot Squad" putting the bag on Jesus
and doing the offing. Crossing says that in all likelyhood you wouldn't
wake the governor of the province because a hill preacher was mouthing
off against Rome. (That is not to say that it didn't happen. The
governor could have been up because he was tipped off about a plot and
the Jesus event happened instead. Crossing just argues that it isn't
very likely, not that it didn't happen....) The Crossing book argues
from the historical record. He says that if you want to argue doctrine
or faith that you need to buy one of his other books. (How many books
has this guy written?)
