Hi David,
I was hoping you'd respond when you saw my request, knowing that you had
done some work on the problem!
I only received one response in total prior to yours, from Dave Durgee,
who has a TP600E, that had NM2200 VGA + Crystal Sound [CS4231], so
eliminated that one.
My VAIO PCG-F190 which came with NM2200 MagicMedia 256AV VGA & Audio -
has inbuilt MPEG2 hardware also - shows the following from PCI.EXE :

From postings on Linux lists from a VAIO-owner with same chipset he had
it working in a bit of a cockeyed manner - had to initialise it with one
sort of Linux module, then use a different one to actually run sound
successfully!
Here are a couple of notes I cut and pasted, whilst chasing stuff on Google:
When running alsaconf from the command line I was presented with a list
of two items. The first item was the Neomagic 256 soundcard and the
second was for ISA/PNP Legacy cards. I had no luck in selecting the
Neomagic 256 soundcard from the list but struck gold when I selected
item number two. A list of sound cards was then presented, all of the
cards were selected by default. I selected the option to allow alsaconf
to probe the cards on the list. After completion of the probe alsconf
successfully configured the card as a Crystal Audio CS4232. It worked
just fine.

Don't know whether that gives you any clues?
Incidentally pci.exe is a DOS application which only runs in a DOS VDM
in OS/2!, and in DOS-box under Win32-bit, so your wife needn't be afraid
of it!
Now several flavours of eCS/MCP on the VAIO in addition to a fresh
installation of W98 from Sony recovery CDs - thankfully they provide a
full complement of CDs for OS and applications originally bundled, and
trying to figure out how to have W2K Pro also [upgraded over clone of
W98 primary, whilst still having IBM BM AND Phoenix S2D [save to disk]
primary partition. Now have full [192MB] complement of 144-pin
low-density SODIMM RAM, as I replaced the original add-on of 64MB
[66MHz] with a 128MB [133MHz].
SNAP ran great, and as you say with eCS 1.2 it misrecognised the Audio
as Crystal SoundFusion, and the installed UNIAUD drivers give the same
result you have experienced.
