  That is not necessary with all products. Eg. my brother's EPSON Stylus
COLOR 680 does waste some color ink when it's used in BW mode. (I wonder
where it spits the ink.) It was only used in BW mode for a year, then I
could print in color perfectly. But after a while the chip on the color
cartridge reported it became empty, so he couldn't print in BW until he
bought a new color cartridge. :( Having to have both cartridge filled is
documented, but is not elaborated.
