EH>I wrote about teachers that are being hired who are not qualified
EH>and you wrote back that you thought there were not enough qualified
EH>candidates.
That's what I wrote, and that's what I believe to be true..
EH>That is not true, except in very few places.
That'll be news to a great many districts who cannot find
science and math candidates, and in which non-majors are
teaching courses. In surveys of science teachers taken
nationally, there are VERY few districts which have physics
majors teaching their physics courses, or chem majors
teaching their chem courses, for example. Many math
teachers have had NO calculus training (which may not be
much of a big deal, but does raise questions as to how a
math major could avoid any calculus).
EH>In California, most of the good teachers left because of the
EH>proposition that was passed.
So.... These teachers, despite the fact that there is no
shortage of teachers, just picked up and left and found
employment - HOW? Mightn't it have been that, as qualified
teachers in an UNqualified market, they were snapped up by
districts STARVED for such candidates?
EH>Now they have found out that did not work and the schools are going
EH>to the dogs, there are not a lot of qualified candidates left.
HUH? How can THAT be? You just said there was no shortage
of qualified teaching candidates around, and those "good"
teachers who left must have displaced OTHER teachers, so
surely there would have to be PLENTY of qualified candidates
available - UNLESS, of course, you're wrong about there NOT
being a shortage?
EH>However in most places there are a lot of qualified candidates,
Name one, then go ASK the people who hire in that district!
EH>.. the hiring process however is based on who you know and not
EH>what you know.
This is EVERYWHERE? When were you last here in Newburgh to
check on this? How many places did you survey before
arriving at this amazing conclusion?
EH>Too often it is based soley on race and who you know.
This is just silly conjecture on your part, but while we're
on the subject, don't you think that it's adviseable to
consider factors OTHER than academics when hiring? It's
been common practice for DECADES, for example, to snatch up
male elementary teachers solely because they're male. Large
males are also preferred in junior highs. Coaching
abilities figure in hiring also. Race, sex, etc are
reasonable considerations in hiring so long as the candidate
meets OTHER criteria.
