I'm not sure if anyone reading this group knows this, but when
astronomers get together at their conventions, there is usually one night
or session devoted to singing astronomy- or science-related filk.
(astrofilk?)
Anyway, about 15 years ago, I wrote and performed this song at a
convention, winning the "Murphy Song Contest".
It took me a while to find it in my boxes of stuff, but I thought it was
relatively timely, given last weeks' NASA tribute to good ol' Carl.
The Cosmic Connection
(to the tune of "The Rainbow Connection", with apologies to Kermit the Frog)
(As might have been sung by Carl Sagan as the theme song for "Cosmos")
Why are we searching for life in the universe
And radio broadcasts from space?
Water-based creatures
That breathe air like we do:
So far, we're the only case.
Somewhere out there
There are civilizations
Advanced technologically.
Some day we'll find them:
The COSMIC CONNECTION -
Aliens, yoo-mans, and me!
Do you get signals from Scorpius X-1
Or from SS433?
But, oh, no! You cannot fool me!
I am just waiting for a coded transmission
From the plane of our galaxy.
Some day they'll find us:
The COSMIC CONNECTION -
Aliens, yoo-mans, and me.
(ev-ryone at JPL is hoping we soon will get con-tact!)
Why aren't they responding
To the message we sent them?
Surely you'd think that they'd care.
Haven't we shown them we're ready for contact?
This waiting is too much to bear!
Send us a laser
Or radio message
Before the Earth goes KER-BLOO-IE!
Let's hope they find us:
The COSMIC CONNECTION -
Aliens, yoo-mans, and me!
