The right made much the same argument about withdrawing from Viet Nam, in
fact from Korea before that.  They were wrong.  Eisenhower won election by
promising to get out of Korea, Johnson was in effect forced out of office
by keeping us in
Viet Nam, while Nixon did well politically by getting us out of Viet Nam.

Given the schoolyard, bullying nature that defines the political right,
getting out of any war without total and absolute victory is thought
disastrous. Ergo, the public will never tolerate it. As with everything the
right preaches, it is baloney.
