subject: Bob`s crook FDD

Hi Paul,
I ran your floppies through my FDD and it reads them
perfectly, but it still baulks at the two Borland discs. I ran the
norton FDD tests on four formatted discs: mine, Paul M's, yours, and
Borlands crook disc #2, and it passed on the lot! But it won't read
the Borland one. Bloody norton is useless.

What I think is happening, is that the Borland disc has been
recorded at a low magnetic level or has been partially wiped by old
age or a magnetic field, and yours (and Paul's) FDD records at the
proper high level. Your FDD reads with more sensitivity than mine, and
where mine drops a few bits, yours gets them all. I suppose this
could be caused by head misalignment, especially on the inner tracks
where the errors will be exaggerated.

Brenton, are you there? Is it possible that it's just dirty heads?
What a bummer!

I'll reinstall this afternoon; first with the original discs with
the #2 and #7 replaced by your good copies, and if it still fails,
I'll try it with your version. If *that* fails, I'll throw the whole
bloody thing out the window and join the Trappist monks.

Thanks for the use of the discs.

Regards,
Bob
