Oh yeah, that's long been the case as you suspected.  Even in OS/2 that's
the case; the desktop will load long before the TCP/IP stack does.  I use
an "undocumented" CMD file, TCPEXIT.CMD, that brings up the BBS
and its assorted programs -after- the TCP/IP stack has loaded.

I think with Linux, though, the TCP/IP stack may load before the desktop
but that might just be different with each distribution or something.
