Hello Phil -
PM> FILES via EMAIL
PM> I used to get files via email through a service called
PM> downloadslave. But they recently went under or stopped the
PM> service.
PM> Does anyone know of another service that does the same
PM> thing?
Hmmmm ... I just posted some information about this in an echo
but I'm not sure which one right now.
There are a few variations of this 'theme'.
Some BBS have setup a method of emailing a listing of the
available files for download and will email your requested
files back to you as an attachment. Positron is one I've tested
and I think Roy Tellason's BBS can do this - Roy?
To got out onto the Internet and retrieve files via http, ftp,
or gopher would require an Agora, www4mail, getweb, or other
'robot' server address to an server with Internet access that
has Agora type software installed and is configured to
respond to anonymous email requests for files.
Search for "WWW By E-mail", send E-Mail to gboyd{at}netcom.com, or
connect to his website at
http://www.geocities.com/CapitolHill/1236/
OR get
ftp://ftp.crl.com/users/iv/iverham/email4u.txt
- for additional information on E-Mail retrieval services
ftp://ftp.crl.com/users/iv/iverham/fun4u.txt
- for other fun things you can do with E-Mail
ftp://ftp.netcom.com/pub/gb/gboyd/wsintro.faq
- more details on using web search engines by E-Mail
I have not used any of this information for several years now
which means many of the URLs will no longer function and some
of the text may require use of a good search engine to find
them.
Agora servers are using very fast connections to the Internet
and I have received replies within 15 minutes on certain less
often used servers. On others it has taken 3-4 days to receive
a reply. Requests are qued in FIFO order which means searching
out those servers least used is worthwhile.
Third world countries require this type of access when their
infrastructure cannot support typical Internet 'backbones' for
browsing etc. (typically used by college professors in those
countries). I'm certain that Agora type servers exist, it's
just a matter of where and what the limitations are as to max
file sizes and max request per email etc.
Many of the original Agora servers were being shutdown due to
abuse by people trying to get entire ISO images of Linux via
email. Really not an appropriate use of a public server?
Keep in mind that _your_ email account limitations will also be
a factor in this.
