You're smarter or just put more time into it than me than.
I thought about using a ramdrive as buffer but did not pursue it.

Not an issue now as I no longer have an operating
486 with unbuffered UART in operation.
For fun in a few months time I may try salvaging
a 16550 UART from my defunct motherboard and putting
 it into the good 486.

Hey, if I had a hardware external 56K voice, FAX, data
modem I'd likely trash 98 for a time and play with 3.1 on the big box,
it DOES have one ISA slot currently occupied by a network card.
Not a clue as to type of CD-ROM but noticed the _second_ OEM
CD has a whole slew of drivers including SoundBlaster
and drivers for DOS, an entire CD with not a single bit
remaining full of additional drivers!

CA> You could now keep Linux on it's own system and Windows on it's
CA> own system without the multiboot thing.

I still prefer to boot Linux out of DOS and I do want
redundacy in depth much as I used to prefer to keep
two motorcycles so as to not be without not
that that ever came up.
Currently PO'ed at 98 and all the automated setup and braindead
OEM provided browsers with no apparent way to manually
enter my news provider, SMTP, POP3, ect.
I _can_ setup the dialer and get a connection at Verizon
through Explorer however.
I just may load the ramdrive Basic Linux 1.8 onto the machine
just to download Netscape with Links and install it in it's own
directory.
I bought a stainless steel cart with wheels of substantial
strength from my next door neighbors yard sale initially
to facilitate the making of home brew as I cannot lug
around the large water filled containers I figured this
was just the thing and cut my beer expenditure to
12 dollars a month of real quality brewsky.
Stands right about at sink and stove level and can be rolled
out of the way on hardwood floors.
Now what's sitting on that cart?
An H.P. computer, monitor, keyboard and slew of
manuals, disks, ect with me and the Pit Bull in between.
I'm beginning to feel a little cramped like Roy ;- )
