It is not an affectation. It is commonly done by people who need bifocals,
but refuse to wear them for whatever reason. Wearing them low on the nose
provides reading ability, while looking over them provides longer distance
acuity.

There are many reasons why people don't wear bifocal. Some just can't get
used to them. Others approach the problem by having two pairs of glasses,
one for reading and one for distance. It is all common enough and not an
affectation at all.
