The cool thing about win98 is that it can make a complete copy of
itself with nothing important missing. If you can network your laptop
to another computer with enough space on a hard drive to copy the
entire works onto a subdirectory on it, you can then put any new hard
drive in your laptop, install win98 command files it (the DOS files
from the recovery diskette), then copy the whole mess over the top of
it, then reboot a clone of your last installation. I used xcopy over a
network to do this before. Or you can copy it onto a DVD if you have a
burner attachable or a few CDRWs.
Most HDDs are 9.5mm thick nowadays, and I think that yours has space
for a 12.5mm HDD. The 9.5s should fit fine.
