Sue, if these are still in your house when it is very cold outside, you
could have them in plants. Do you have indoor plants? The earwigs
could be in the soil. You can treat the soil with stuff like diazinon
and it won't hurt any pets you have. Have you got any spiders in your
house? Check basement areas or dark areas for webs. First of all
don't kill the spiders, secondly see if there are any trapped earwigs
in the spider webs. The first year that we bought our present house,
we had an earwig problem. They can squeeze under loose fitting doors.
We removed the two exterior doors and added sweeps to the bottoms and
made sure that the doors were snug. If you have aluminum storm doors,
they are hollow in a lot of places and the earwigs will get into those
areas and eventually into the house when you leave the house door open
on warmer days. The trough area where the aluminum window fits when
closed, is a good place to put baby talcum powder. (Note that not all
baby powders are talcum...I think that Johnson's might be the only
one.) Talc will kill earwigs. Shake talc inside your window ledges and
any area that the earwigs will have to cross. If you have pets, then
look in Chinese areas for a product called Chinese Chalk. It looks
like ordinary chalk but it is also talc and you can draw a line where
the earwigs might cross. This will kill them. We tried all of these
things and we seldom see one. Good luck.
