Hello Johnathan:
I think you are right on target in your suspecion that a discussion about
the departure of Ralph Sanders from our movement might raise matters that
would be unduly sensitive. Suffice it to say that Ralph's problems over a
good many years have been far more personal than political. Ralph was an
especially close personal friend of mine until it became impossible for
that relationship to continue. In leaving our movement, no one threw
Ralph out. He chose very consciously to leave. I remember hearing at the
time from others that Ralph was saying that the organized blind movement
was not a significant factor in his life. Although I have never thought
about our not including his 1978 banquet speech among our literature, I
rather imagine that Ralph himself would not insist upon having it
otherwise. I say this because Ralph decided to disassociate himself from
the rest of us as though we didn't count for much.
With all due respect to Ralph and to who he was at one point in our
movement, I really think we should leave it at that. As far as I know, he
is not presently active in any organization and not much would be gained
by gosseping about events that ended twelve years ago.
thanks,
J. G.
